We've all been in situations where we don't say the thing we want to say.
We're afraid of the backlash of going against the grain.
We fear the judgment that comes with choosing to do what we want to do.
So, what other people think becomes the basis of every action and decision we make.
We end up imprisoning ourselves in expectations that deny our authentic expression, and eventually erode our sense of who we truly are and what we even want.
At what point then, does the world's expectations end and we, as individuals, begin?
In a world that tells us who we are supposed to be and how those roles are to be performed, we are conditioned to earn our place by conforming. It starts with the way we are groomed as children to behave certain ways based on familial, societal, and cultural norms. We are praised for keeping the peace and punished for disrupting it.
Think about how many times your parents and grandparents scolded:
"We don't say that."
"You're not supposed to do that."
"Children are to be seen and not heard."
Granted, there are times when these are valid directions, but when our self-expression is repeatedly muted, we slowly become who other people expect us to be.
😔You become “the good girl” who responsibly takes care of everyone else except herself.
😔You become “the strong one” who tolerates more than she deserves but never complains.
😔You are glorified for your self-sacrifice when you dismiss your own wants and needs, but that glory feels more like depressing defeat.
Gas lighting us with these seemingly positive labels compels us to continue assuming them; but the more we perform these roles, the harder it is to step outside them.
You might fear disappointing people, being called “dramatic” or “difficult,” or losing love and approval. So you stay in character, even when it hurts.
Living a life that has been dictated to you has real mental health consequences.
You may feel disconnected from your own choices, moving through life on autopilot, unsure what you actually like, want, or believe anymore. But you press on, constantly pushing down your emotions and needs, experiencing anxiety, depression, chronic stress, and burnout all the while.
Start by noticing. Gently observe when you say “yes” while meaning “no,” or minimize what you feel. Awareness is the first crack in the prison wall.
Name your needs. Privately at first, write down what you actually want and need in a situation—time, space, honesty, help, or change. Your wants and needs deserve to be acknowledged, even if only by you for now.
Practice small truths. You don’t have to start with a life-altering confrontation. Begin with simple statements like “I’m actually tired,” “That hurt my feelings,” or “I’d rather do this instead.” You can start by admitting these truths to yourself first, then work up to sharing them out loud with others.
Expect discomfort, not disaster. Speaking up may feel shaky at first. That's just your nervous system feeling the discomfort of doing something new and different. As you express yourself more, your nervous system will realize you are safe and respond by easing up.
Seek supportive spaces. Surround yourself with people who accept you as you truly are and respect your boundaries. They can help you remember who you are beyond old labels.
The real answer usually lives beneath conscious awareness.
