My husband recently expressed concern about hearing me talk about how unhappy I am. There was only one problem with that observation:
I never said I was unhappy.
I said I often feel unfulfilled.
And those are not the same thing.
I am a woman with an enormous appetite for connection, contribution, intellectual stimulation, movement, experiences, impact, and anticipation. And I have all of that . . .sometimes.
Other times, the quiet peaceful life my husband built for me to heal within, and for which I'm eternally grateful for, can feel like too small a container for all of those needs.
Perhaps a part of me worries about how much of my life was spent dishonoring my gifts and life purpose, to the extent that I get anxious about every moment not spent fulfilling that mission.
Regardless, that doesn't mean I'm unhappy. That doesn't make me ungrateful, either.
What this does mean is that there is an opportunity to fill my heart with what it's missing, instead of waiting for "life" to do it for me.
According to a 2025 study published in the National Library of Medicine, women often report high overall life satisfaction, while simultaneously experiencing higher rates of diagnosed anxiety and depression compared to men.
The study primarily blames gender disparities where expectations are concerned for the lack of fulfillment. Basically, it's the same old story of the woman having to prioritize everyone else's health, happiness, and fulfillment, at the sacrifice of her own.
That emptiness causes sadness, which is thereby perceived as depression or a symptom of some other hormonal imbalance or mental health issue; which altogether begs another question about how many women who are unfulfilled are being wrongly treated or medicated for some flippant diagnosis.
The mistake so many women make when they feel unhappy is that they think they do have a mental health issue. They tell themselves they have to fill their lives with more people and activities and commitments and obligations, hoping something within all of that busy-ness will light them up where the spark has gone out.
You can have a very full schedule and still have a very unfulfilled heart.
You ask two questions:
and
These are yes or no questions which are most truthfully answered with your immediate response, keeping in mind that . . .
Because whatever or whomever energizes and excites you, and leaves your soul wanting for more . . .those are the passions and people who will provide both happiness and fulfillment, leading to a life you truly love, instead of a life you're just living.
Fulfillment doesn't come from convincing yourself to be satisfied with what you have. It comes from understanding what you need, what you want, and whether the life you're living actually reflects who you truly are.
So instead of asking yourself, “Why am I not happy?”
Ask a better question:
“What part of me isn't being expressed, experienced, or fulfilled?”
The answer might change everything.

Maybe you need a life that finally has enough of YOU in it.
